SEASON’S END

WALKING ACROSS THE COVE TOWARD PETER DOWLING’S WHARF AT RIDLEY COVE, CUNDY’S HARBOR, MAINE

RIPPLING WATER GLISTENS ON THE BAY;

THE SETTING SUN TOO TIRED NOW TO PLAY.

HERE A TERN SWEEPS DOWN UPON THE LEA;

THERE A GULL IS PERCHED ATOP A ROCK

AS WITHIN THE COVE, SHELTERED FROM OPEN SEA,

A FISHERMAN HAULS HIS TRAPS UPON THE DOCK –

AT LAST THE FINAL ONE –

HE STRAIGHTENS UP

AND HEADS FOR LAND

AND HOME AND HEARTH AND SUP
